Causes of Raised Lactate Level
Some common causes:
• Sepsis Mechanism: related to increase in glycolysis resulting in increased pyruvate and lactate production • May increase within 2 hours after generalized tonic-clonic seizure • Mechanism: increased anaerobic glucose metabolism during the short hypoxia experienced by muscle cells during a tonic-clonic seizure

Serum Lactate in Sepsis
• Prognostication / Indicator of severity — In sepsis, serum
lactate
• Serum lactate less than 2 mmol/L: 15%
• Serum lactate 2 – 4 mmol/L: 25%
• Serum lactate mre than 4 mmol/L: 38%
